Teaming up with Marvel Entertainment to redesign their dot-com included the distinct challenge of creating a clear and intuitive way for users to search the immense volumes of Marvel comics and characters. Modular page layouts were designed to accommodate recurring content updates, and used to cross-promote related content.

Two web-apps would foster creativity among kids looking for deeper levels of engagement with Marvel. The first – Create your Own Superhero – allowed fans to design their own character, with infinite customization possibilities. The second – Create Your Own Comic – let fans unfold entire storylines and even create comic books from start to finish.

For both its design and usability, Create Your Own Comic has garnered industry accolades and praise from publications such as Wired Magazine and Mashable as well as:

While the site has evolved, we were honored to have much of our design embraced by the keepers of Marvel’s brand essence.

Given the vast and complex nature of the Marvel Universe, it was crucial to get the search and browse functionality right.

Create Your Own Superhero was as much fun to build as it was to use. In fact, it never gets old!

And once users were done creating superheroes, we gave them the ability to script their own comic (and publish it too!)
